Yugoslavia secured the rights to host the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo over competing bids from Sapporo and Gothenburg — a significant diplomatic achievement for a non-aligned socialist state. The commemorative coin program that followed was extensive, covering multiple sports across several denominations and struck in both silver and base metal versions for different markets.
Bobsledding at Sarajevo was held on the newly constructed Trebević course, the first artificially refrigerated bobsled track ever built in a communist country.
