Krste Petkov-Misirkov published his landmark work Za Makedonckite Raboti ("On Macedonian Matters") in Sofia in 1903, arguing forcefully for a distinct Macedonian literary language at a moment when Bulgarian, Serbian, and Greek interests were all competing to absorb the region's identity. The Sofia printer reportedly destroyed most of the run under political pressure almost immediately after publication, leaving very few copies in circulation.
This coin was issued on the centenary of that text. The gold statehood series from this period marked North Macedonia's post-independence assertion of a specifically Macedonian historical canon.
