Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, founded in 1967 as a state institution modeled broadly on Soviet-bloc academy structures common across Yugoslavia's orbit — though Yugoslavia itself maintained enough independence from Moscow that the Academy developed a distinctly non-dogmatic research culture from early on. The MANU, as it is known, was established by law under the Socialist Republic of Macedonia and survived the dissolution of Yugoslavia largely intact.
KM#63 is a low-mintage commemorative with limited secondary market presence outside the region.
