Macedonia's silver commemorative program has produced numerous issues tied to regional heritage, but KM#56 sits in a decade when the country's very name was under active international dispute — Greece had blocked NATO and EU accession over the "Macedonia" naming controversy since 1991, a standoff that would not be formally resolved until the Prespa Agreement of 2018. Coins issued by the National Bank during this window carry the full "Republic of Macedonia" designation that Athens contested at every multilateral forum.
The Elena series draws on medieval Macedonian folk tradition. Mintage for .925 silver issues from Skopje in this period rarely exceeded a few thousand pieces.
