Vietnam's participation in the Sydney Games marked only the country's fifth appearance at a Summer Olympics, having first competed in 1952 under a very different political dispensation. The State Bank issued a series of commemorative silver pieces for the event, this being among the more modestly denominated. At 100 đồng face value, it was essentially notional currency — the denomination had long since ceased to represent any meaningful purchasing power in an economy where even small transactions ran into the tens of thousands.
