| Beschrijving voorzijde | Printed in blue on a polychrome underprint using intaglio and offset techniques, the obverse is centred on a formal portrait vignette of Dom Pedro II (Pedro de Alcântara de Bragança e Bourbon) set within an ornate decorated frame. The numeral 100 appears in large format on each flank of the central vignette. Inscriptions identify the issuing authority and denomination, with the imprint of the American Bank Note Company at the base. |

Brazil's wartime fiscal management threw up some unusual documentary artifacts, and this note is one of them. The Tesouro Nacional — functioning here as a direct issuer rather than routing obligations through the Banco do Brasil — produced a series that ABNC printed in New York at a moment when transatlantic shipping made European printers impractical. The "autographed" designation refers to manuscript signatures applied to individual notes rather than facsimile-printed ones, a distinction that adds meaningful handling time to each piece and limits how many could realistically enter circulation quickly.
The first print of P#138 is the scarcer of the series runs; later printings shifted to printed signature facsimiles.
