Issued in 1988 to mark the centennial of the Lei Áurea — the "Golden Law" signed by Princess Isabel on May 13, 1888, which abolished slavery in Brazil, making it the last country in the Western Hemisphere to do so. The commemorative program produced two distinct pieces: one featuring an adult figure, this one a child. The pairing was deliberate, distinguishing the immediate liberation from the generational promise it carried.
Brazil's abolition came without compensation to the enslaved and without land reform, leaving most freedpeople in conditions of debt peonage within months.
