The birth year '1900' appears to the left of the effigy and the death year '1979' to the right, commemorating his assassination. Additional information

Issued to mark the first anniversary of Mountbatten's assassination in August 1979, when an IRA bomb destroyed his fishing boat off the coast of Mullaghmore, County Sligo. He was 79. The attack killed three others aboard, including his fourteen-year-old grandson. The Turks and Caicos Islands had become a reliable vehicle for commemorative crown issues by this point — the 1970s saw the territory mint dozens of such pieces targeting collector markets rather than circulation.
