Beschrijving voorzijde The national coat of arms of Costa Rica occupies the central field, depicting three volcanoes rising above a maritime landscape with a sailing vessel, flanked by decorative scrollwork supporters on either side. A ribbon above the shield bears the legend AMERICA CENTRAL, while a second ribbon across the upper shield reads REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA, accompanied by seven stars representing the seven provinces. The circumferential legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA · AMERICA CENTRAL runs along the upper periphery, with the date 1970 and issuer's initials B.C.C.R. inscribed at the base. The design is framed by a beaded border and rendered in high-relief proof finish.

Beschrijving keerzijde The central field features a stylized pre-Columbian indigenous gold pendant in the form of a ceremonial figure, depicting a masked anthropomorphic deity with an elaborate headdress and two large curved appendages flanking a secondary face motif at the base, referencing the famous tumbaga goldwork traditions of ancient Costa Rica. The denomination 100 COLONES is inscribed in two lines in the lower field, with a small fineness mark 900 visible to the right. The upper peripheral legend ARTE INDIGENA DE ORO arcs around the design, flanked by dash separators, and the entire composition is enclosed within a beaded border.
