The Banco Internacional de Costa Rica was established in 1914 as a state-owned institution, effectively absorbing functions previously held by private banks and marking a significant shift toward government control of the money supply. This 100 Colones note was part of the inaugural series issued under the new bank's authority — a high denomination for a newly reorganized institution still establishing public confidence.
The American Bank Note Company contract is unsurprising; ABNC dominated Latin American central bank printing during this period. What makes P#164 notable is its rarity at this denomination — 100 Colones represented a substantial sum in 1914 Costa Rica, limiting its active circulation largely to commercial transactions.
