The Banco Central de Reserva de El Salvador had relied on American Bank Note Company for its higher denominations through much of the mid-twentieth century, and this 1977 issue continues that relationship. The 100 Colones was the largest denomination in regular circulation at the time — significant in a country where the colón had maintained a fixed rate of 2.50 to the US dollar since 1934, a peg that would hold until the 2001 dollarization formally retired the currency altogether.
ABNC's intaglio work on Salvadoran notes from this period is generally clean, with fine-line guilloche that holds detail well even after heavy use.
