The Banco Central de Reserva de El Salvador had maintained a relationship with the American Bank Note Company going back decades by the time this note was issued, and the 100 Colones was among the higher-denomination pieces in active commercial circulation during El Salvador's mid-century coffee export boom — when large-denomination notes actually moved through hands rather than sitting in vaults.
The watermark is the sole mechanical security feature, which was already conservative by 1958 standards. ABNC was capable of more elaborate protection, but the Salvadoran series of this period kept specifications modest.
