The Yumin Tongbao issues belong to the short-lived fiefdom granted to Geng Jingzhong, one of the Three Feudatories whose rebellion against the Kangxi Emperor began in 1673. Geng controlled Fujian province and struck these oversized cash pieces — the "Zhe Yi Qian" inscription marking them as equivalent to one qian in silver — to fund his military campaign. The rebellion collapsed faster than anticipated; Geng surrendered in 1676 and was later executed in 1682.
Surviving examples frequently show uneven casting typical of emergency provincial production under wartime conditions.
