The Kucha mint, operating in what is now Xinjiang, was pushed into striking these oversized emergency cash during the Taiping Rebellion — a civil war that drained imperial treasury resources so severely that Xianfeng's government debased the coinage repeatedly and introduced denominations well beyond anything previously minted for ordinary circulation. The 100-cash pieces were deeply unpopular; merchants and commoners alike refused them at face value almost immediately.
Kucha examples are distinguished from other provincial strikes of this type by their notably crude casting, a product of a frontier mint working under supply pressure far from Beijing's oversight.
