The Banco Nacional de Bolivia was established in 1871 with a concession from the Bolivian government, operating as the country's dominant commercial bank and primary note-issuing institution through the 1870s and 1880s. By 1883, the bank had survived the disruption of the War of the Pacific — which stripped Bolivia of its Pacific coastline and devastated government finances — and continued issuing notes backed by its own reserves rather than any central authority.
American Bank Note Company produced the plates, as it did for the majority of South American banking institutions of this period. ABNC's grip on the regional market was near-total by the 1880s, which makes distinguishing one country's private bank issues from another largely a matter of reading the text.
