100 Bolivianos Banco Nacional de Bolivia

The Banco Nacional de Bolivia was established in 1871 — Bolivia's first chartered bank — primarily to finance the silver mining economy centered on Potosí and Huanchaca. This 100 Bolivianos note dates to just two years after the bank opened its doors, when its banknotes were still an unfamiliar instrument in a country where hard silver coin had long dominated trade.

The American Bank Note Company held the contract for this series, engraving and printing the notes in New York before shipment to Bolivia. ABNC's involvement was typical for newly chartered Latin American banks of the period, which lacked domestic printing infrastructure capable of producing secure currency.

The bank would later collapse amid the financial disruptions following Bolivia's defeat in the War of the Pacific, with its note-issuing privileges revoked in 1890.
