Banco Mercantil y Agrícola was one of several Venezuelan commercial banks authorized to issue private banknotes in the early twentieth century, a practice that continued until the Banco Central de Venezuela was established in 1940 and assumed exclusive note-issuing authority. The 1929 date places this note squarely in the oil boom years — Venezuela was by then the world's largest petroleum exporter, and the banking sector was expanding rapidly on the back of that revenue.
ABNC printed extensively for Venezuelan private banks during this period, and the quality of engraving reflects their top-tier commercial work. P#S233 is catalogued in the Specialized section, indicating private or quasi-official issue rather than central government currency.
