The Battle of Carabobo, fought on 24 June 1821, effectively ended Spanish colonial rule over Venezuela — Simón Bolívar's forces routed the royalist army in under two hours. The 200th anniversary commemorative issue arrived, however, in a country experiencing one of the worst hyperinflationary collapses in modern Latin American history, making 100 bolívares a denomination worth fractions of a US cent at time of printing.
Venezuela had already redenominated twice in the preceding decade — the bolívar fuerte in 2008, the bolívar soberano in 2018 — yet another redenomination followed in October 2021, just months after this note was issued, rendering it obsolete almost immediately upon release.
