Venezuela's monetary system underwent a slow-motion collapse throughout this period, with the Chávez government imposing strict foreign exchange controls in early 2003 following a crippling oil strike that had paralyzed PDVSA. The 100 bolívar coin, worth roughly three U.S. cents at official rates by the end of this series, was already economically marginal before the bolívar fuerte redenomination of 2008 wiped it from the books entirely at a ratio of 1,000 to one.
