The bank title BANCO DE VENEZUELA and the subtitle SOCIEDAD ANÓNIMA are inscribed in bold letterpress across the upper portion, flanked on either side by green guilloche medallions bearing the numeral 100. The lower margin carries the obligation text PAGADERO AL PORTADOR EN LAS OFICINAS DEL BANCO, the issuing city CARACAS, and three facsimile signature lines, with the printer imprint of the American Bank Note Company at the bottom center. |

Banco de Venezuela was a private commercial bank operating under government concession, not a central bank — Venezuela wouldn't establish a true central bank until 1940. These early issues functioned as de facto national currency precisely because no state-issued alternative existed. The American Bank Note Company in New York handled the printing, as was common for Latin American commercial banks of the period that lacked domestic high-security printing facilities.
The 1916–1921 dating span reflects reissues from the same plate series rather than distinct design changes. Notes payable at the Caracas office; branch-payable variants exist for Maracaibo and other cities and carry meaningful premium over the standard issue.
