The Austral was introduced in June 1985 as the centrepiece of the Austral Plan, an emergency stabilisation package under President Alfonsín designed to arrest inflation that had already exceeded 1,000% annually. One Austral replaced 1,000 Pesos Argentinos — itself a replacement currency from 1983. The denomination held reasonably well for roughly two years before inflation reasserted itself with force.

By 1989, the Austral was collapsing. The 100-Austral note, worth meaningful money at issue, became near-worthless pocket change before the series was retired. Argentina replaced the Austral with the Peso Convertible in 1992 at a rate of 10,000 to one.
