Rwanda's gold bullion program, launched in partnership with the Bavarian State Mint, has used the Central African nation's issuing authority largely as a licensing arrangement — the coins are designed and struck in Munich, with Rwanda providing the legal tender framework. The Lunar series issues, of which this is one, compete directly with the Royal Australian Mint's established Lunar program and the Perth Mint's equivalent, targeting the same European collector-investor market.
KM#176 mintage figures were tightly controlled, as is consistent with the series.
