This is the largest denomination coin China has ever issued, and one of the heaviest gold bullion pieces produced by any sovereign mint in the modern era. The 10-kilogram format places it in a category occupied by very few government-issued coins worldwide. Production numbers are not publicly disclosed by the People's Bank of China, but pieces of this scale are invariably struck in quantities of a few hundred at most, destined for institutional buyers and major collectors rather than any secondary retail market.

The 2017 Lunar series issue marked the final year of the rooster cycle before the transition to the dog year, with China's mint having refined the multi-kilogram lunar format significantly since its introduction in the 1980s.
