Corporate scrip on polymer is unusual enough, but this note comes from an active defense manufacturer — the Sokol plant in Nizhny Novgorod has produced MiG fighters since the Soviet period and was still fulfilling state contracts when this was issued in 2007. Factory-issued currency of this kind typically circulated as internal payment tokens, sometimes for canteen credits or bonus disbursements, during periods when wage arrears made cash distribution unreliable. Russia's 1990s arrears crisis had largely passed by 2007, which raises genuine questions about why a functioning defense enterprise found it necessary to issue its own denomination at this late date.
The polymer substrate is a deliberate choice — far more durable than paper for tokens expected to pass through industrial hands repeatedly.
