Bolivia's inflation crisis of the early 1980s was among the worst in recorded history — by 1985, the annual rate exceeded 20,000%. This note was already an emergency denomination when it appeared in 1984, and within months it was effectively worthless pocket change. The entire Pesos Bolivianos series was swept away in August 1985 when the government introduced the Boliviano at a conversion rate of one million to one.
De La Rue produced the note in London under contract, a common arrangement for Bolivian currency throughout this period, even as the domestic economy collapsed around the denominations they were printing.
