Konsumverein "Eintracht" was a consumer cooperative in Essen, and like hundreds of similar organizations across the Ruhr and Rhine regions, it issued its own notgeld during the hyperinflation of 1923 when Reichsbank notes became worthless faster than they could be printed. Cooperative-issued emergency money of this type was redeemable only at the issuer's own shops — effectively internal scrip — which kept it out of general circulation and means surviving examples often show little wear.
The 100,000 Mark denomination dates this to mid-1923, before the astronomical valuations of the autumn collapse.
