The Bank für das Nahetal was a regional commercial bank serving the Nahe valley district, and its Birkenfelder Landesbank arm became one of dozens of German provincial institutions authorized to issue emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflation of 1923. The 100,000 Mark denomination, staggering by any prewar measure, was already worth almost nothing by the time notes of this type left the press. Within weeks of issue, denominations were climbing into the billions.
Birkenfeld itself was under French occupation at the time, a complicating administrative factor for any institution trying to maintain functional banking operations in the Rhineland.
