| Beschrijving voorzijde | Blue-grey Notgeld voucher enclosed within an intricate guilloche border with foliate corner ornaments. An oval cartouche at the top carries the title 'Gutschein' in Gothic script, and the denomination 'Einhunderttausend Mark' is set in large blackletter type at centre, with validity conditions printed above and below in smaller Gothic text. The issuing authority 'Der Rat der Stadt Plauen' and the date 'Plauen, den 1. August 1923' appear in the lower half, above two manuscript signature lines with their respective titles, and a rectangular panel at the foot repeats the denomination in full. |

Plauen's local emergency currency — Notgeld — was a product of the hyperinflationary spiral of 1923, when the Reichsmark's collapse made central government notes nearly worthless before they could be spent. Municipal and commercial authorities across Germany issued their own scrip to keep local economies functioning, each denomination racing to stay ahead of price increases that were doubling weekly by mid-year. A 100,000 Mark note, staggering in 1922, was small change by August 1923.
Plauen, a textile manufacturing center in the Vogtland, had its own printing infrastructure, which is why local production was practical rather than a compromise.
