Adorf im Vogtland was a small textile-industry town in Saxony, and like hundreds of German municipalities in the summer of 1923, its Stadtrat was forced into emergency currency issuance when hyperinflation outpaced the Reichsbank's ability to supply legal tender in useful denominations. The 100,000 Mark face value, staggering by any prior standard, was already losing purchasing power within days of printing — by August 1923, a single loaf of bread cost multiples of what this note claimed to be worth.
Local printing meant inconsistent production quality across the Notgeld series; Adorf's issues were typically produced by small regional jobbing printers with no banknote experience.
