Plauen's municipal emergency currency — Notgeld — places this note squarely within the hyperinflationary collapse of mid-1923, when the Reichsbank could not supply denominations large enough for everyday transactions fast enough. Cities, towns, and even private firms were legally permitted to fill the gap. At 100,000 Mark, this represents a mid-range denomination for its moment; within weeks of comparable issues, the required figures would climb to millions, then billions.

The guilloche underprint is the one concession to anti-counterfeiting discipline — locally printed Notgeld varied enormously in production quality, and Plauen's examples are no exception.
