| Reverse description | The reverse is dominated by a large central circular vignette, reproduced after a copperplate engraving by Matthäus Merian, showing the ruined church of St. Michael (S. Michaelskirche) on the Heiligenberg hill above Heidelberg, dated 1619, set within a broad landscape. In the foreground of the vignette, a symbolic motif of an arm grasping a laurel-wreathed sword is rendered in fine line work. Large decorative numerals '100000' flank the central medallion on left and right in ornate calligraphic style, with 'MARK' inscribed alongside each. Marginal border legends run on all four sides identifying the depicted monument and the source engraving. |
