Sonneberg was a center of toy and glass manufacturing in Thuringia, and by mid-1923 the municipal treasury — the Stadtkasse — was doing what hundreds of German towns were forced to do: issuing emergency currency because Reichsbank notes couldn't reach circulation fast enough to keep pace with hyperinflation. This Notgeld at 100,000 Mark represents the phase when values that would have seemed absurd eighteen months earlier had become routine denominational necessity.

Municipal issues from smaller Thuringian towns are frequently underdocumented. Sonneberg's 1923 emergency issues were purely functional — no collector-oriented Serienscheine pretensions here.
