The Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, not St. Peter's, holds the rank of mother church of Rome and of the world — "omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput" — a distinction that makes its appearance on a Vatican gold issue politically deliberate rather than decorative.
