This issue belongs to a commemorative gold series the Banca d'Italia produced through the 1990s, each piece tied to a specific cultural or institutional theme rather than circulation. By 1993, Italy was deep in the Tangentopoli crisis — the nationwide corruption investigations that would dissolve the First Republic and eliminate most of the established political parties within two years. Whether intentional or not, minting prestige gold coinage while the political establishment collapsed around it says something about institutional continuity.
