Issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the Turkish Republic, founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on October 29, 1923. The timing coincided with a turbulent period for Turkish monetary policy — by 1999, cumulative inflation had so thoroughly eroded the lira that this 100,000-unit denomination represented roughly the purchasing power of a single lira two decades earlier. The coin circulated alongside banknotes denominated in the millions, a situation the government finally addressed with the 2005 redenomination that introduced the New Turkish Lira at a ratio of 1,000,000 to one.
