Romania's postwar hyperinflation was among the most severe in European history outside the Weimar episode. By 1947, prices had escalated to the point where 100,000 Lei was a routine transactional denomination rather than a large note — the same year the Communist-backed government forced King Michael's abdication and replaced the currency entirely with the 1947 leu, wiping out savings at punishing exchange rates.
