100 000 Gulden Millennium

Issued to mark the turn of the millennium, this piece was produced by the Centrale Bank van Suriname at a moment of acute economic stress — the late 1990s had seen the Surinamese guilder collapse through successive devaluations, with inflation briefly exceeding 800% annually in 1994. A gold commemorative denominated at 100,000 guilders was less a functional coin than an acknowledgment that the currency's face values had become arithmetically absurd. Suriname replaced the guilder entirely with the Surinamese dollar in 2004, making this one of the final gold issues in the guilder series.
