Untertaunuskreis — a rural district in Nassau — was one of hundreds of German administrative bodies forced to print emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not supply denominations large enough to meet daily wage payments. The 100-million Mark figure, staggering in name, was barely adequate for a week's groceries by the time notes of this denomination were actually circulating. Georg Grandpierre's Idstein print shop handled the run, a local commercial printer pressed into monetary service like so many others that year.
The Rentenmark reform of November 1923 rendered the entire series worthless almost immediately after issue.
