The Reichsbahndirektion Köln was among dozens of regional railway administrations that issued emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to meet payroll demands. Railway districts had a practical incentive: they needed to pay workers weekly, sometimes daily, and waiting for central bank transfers was no longer viable by mid-1923.
At 100 million Mark, this note dates from a period when that sum was losing purchasing power faster than the ink could dry. The Cologne district was under particular pressure given the French and Belgian occupation of the Ruhr, which had disrupted rail operations and supply chains across the Rhineland since January 1923.
Corporate Notgeld of this type was redeemable only by the issuing body, not at state banks.
