Reichsbahndirektion Breslau was one of dozens of regional railway administrations authorized to issue emergency money during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsmark was collapsing fast enough that payroll currency became obsolete between printing and distribution. Railway directorates issued notgeld partly out of necessity and partly because they had the institutional infrastructure — and, in this case, a reliable local printer in W. G. Korn — to produce it quickly.
The 100-million mark face value dates this note to late summer or autumn 1923, after the exchange rate had passed the point of absurdity. Korn's inclusion of a watermark at this denomination is notable; many emergency issuers at this stage abandoned security features entirely.
