| Obverse description | Printed in dark brown and red-brown on cream paper, the obverse is laid out in two sections divided by a guilloche-patterned right panel. The central left field carries the denomination in large Gothic blackletter script reading 'Hundert Millionen Mark', set over a lozenge-shaped underprint, with the issuing authority 'Notgeld der Stadt Kaiserslautern' in letterpress across the top. Below the denomination, the place and date of issue 'Kaiserslautern den 20. September 1923' appear in italic script, flanked by two manuscript facsimile signatures above the printed titles 'Bürgermeister' (Stadtverwaltung) and 'Finanzrat' (Stadthauptkasse), with a central clause stating the redemption date would be announced in the daily press; the lower margin bears the validity notice 'Umlauffähig im ganzen Regierungsbezirk Pfalz. Kaiserslautern was one of hundreds of German municipalities forced into emergency currency printing during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank could no longer produce notes fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time this hundred-million-mark note was issued, that denomination would have bought less than a loaf of bread — and within weeks, even that was no longer true.
Notgeld at this scale was typically printed on whatever local press capacity was available, often with minimal security features. The Stadtverwaltung had no banking infrastructure of its own; it issued these notes purely on municipal authority, with redemption promises that the economic situation made effectively meaningless.
