| Obverse description | Printed in black on cream paper, the obverse is framed by a dense geometric guilloche border of interlocking lozenge and floral motifs. The issuer's title 'Stadt- und Landkreis Aachen.' is set in bold blackletter at the top, with the denomination 'Hundert Millionen Mark' in large Gothic typeface over a fine engine-turned underprint; two circular official seals bearing the Aachen eagle flank a red-overprinted series letter and serial number at upper centre. The date 'Aachen, den 20. Juli 1923' and two manuscript signatures appear in the lower portion beneath the redemption clause, with the printer's imprint 'AUG. HEINRIGS, AACHEN.' at the foot, and a detachable counterfoil to the right carrying an ornate Baroque cartouche inscribed '100 Millionen'. |

Aachen's municipal authority issued this hundred-million mark note during the most acute phase of the 1923 hyperinflation, when the Reichsbank's supply of emergency currency was simply outpaced by demand and local administrations across Germany printed their own Notgeld to meet payroll and daily commerce. By the time denominations this large were circulating, the note's face value was already eroding within hours of issue.
Aug. Heinrigs was a local Aachen printer — not a specialist security printer — which is exactly the point. Speed and availability mattered; engraving quality did not.
