Gewerkschaft Orange was a coal-mining syndicate operating in the Gelsenkirchen district of the Ruhr — one of dozens of industrial concerns that resorted to printing their own emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923 when the Reichsbank simply could not supply enough physical notes fast enough to meet wage demands. This 100,000,000,000 Mark denomination — one hundred billion — would have been worth almost nothing within days of printing, such was the pace of the collapse in the final months before the Rentenmark stabilization of November 1923.
Company-issued notgeld of this type was often printed on whatever paper stock was locally available, and Gelsenkirchen printers were working under extraordinary pressure that autumn.
