The Deutsche Reichsbahn — the German national railway — became one of dozens of non-bank institutions authorized to issue emergency currency during the hyperinflation crisis of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to meet demand. Railway administrations, municipalities, and industrial firms all entered the money-printing business out of necessity. This note, denominated at one hundred billion Mark, was functional transport-sector scrip, not a banking instrument.
By the time denominations this large were circulating, the figures had become almost meaningless — the stabilization via the Rentenmark came in November 1923, and most Reichsbahn notgeld of this period was redeemed and pulped shortly after.
