This note was issued by the City of Essen during the Ruhr occupation crisis of 1923, when French and Belgian troops had seized the industrial heartland and the German federal government was actively encouraging passive resistance — including a deliberate strategy of flooding the economy with emergency currency to fund striking workers. Municipal and regional authorities across the Ruhr printed Notgeld at an almost incomprehensible pace to meet payroll obligations that the central bank could not cover fast enough.
The denomination itself tells the story: one hundred billion Mark on a single note, printed within a monetary collapse so severe that the figure was routine by October 1923.
