Issued to mark the millennial anniversary of the Congress of Gniezno, the 2000 meeting between Holy Roman Emperor Otto III and Bolesław I of Poland that effectively secured ecclesiastical and political recognition of the nascent Polish state. Otto III's visit — unprecedented for a reigning emperor — elevated the Gniezno archbishopric and laid groundwork for Poland's eventual royal coronation in 1025.
The oxidized silver core produces a deliberately darkened surface finish, a technique the NBP employed on several commemoratives of this period to create visual contrast with the polished fields.
