Wrocław held the European Capital of Culture designation in 2016 jointly with Donostia-San Sebastián and Pafos — an unusual three-city arrangement that year. The city's selection was partly a statement of post-communist cultural recovery; Wrocław had been systematically depopulated of its German-speaking inhabitants after 1945 and repopulated with Poles expelled from Lwów and other eastern territories ceded to the Soviet Union.
Mennica Polska issued this piece as part of its ongoing regional commemorative program. Mintage for the series typically runs in the low thousands.
