The Tatrzańskie Ochotnicze Pogotowie Ratunkowe — TOPR — was founded in 1909, making this coin a centenary issue. The organization predates the Polish state that eventually sponsored this coin by nearly a decade, having been established under Habsburg administration in Galicia. It remains an all-volunteer body, funded largely by public donation, responsible for one of the most technically demanding mountain rescue environments in Central Europe.
The pad printing technique applied to the silver flan was used to render color detail — a relatively new production method for Polish commemoratives at the time of issue.
