The eagle occupies the majority of the field, its talons visible at the base. Poland's post-war communist government had a complicated relationship with Kościuszko — a hero of both the American Revolution and the 1794 Polish insurrection, he was useful nationalist symbolism but ideologically awkward. This 1958 trial strike belongs to an extended series of pattern and proof issues produced by the Warsaw Mint as the authorities tested designs and compositions before committing to circulating coinage. The "próba" inscription oriented vertically rather than in the conventional horizontal reading is what separates this Fischer Po#P086c piece from its siblings — a minor typographic decision that creates a distinct catalogued variety.
