Issued to mark Poland's participation in the Beijing Summer Olympics, this coin belongs to a long Polish tradition of Olympic commemoratives that dates to the country's return to international competition after the communist-era boycotts. Poland had skipped the 1984 Los Angeles Games in solidarity with the Soviet-led bloc — Beijing represented, two decades later, a very different kind of engagement with the world stage.
